Which Apartments Are Most Commonly Targeted?
Based on our experience, apartments located on the ground floor, mezzanine level, and top floor tend to be more attractive targets for burglars.
There are several reasons for this:
- Less foot traffic from neighbors
- Fewer potential witnesses
- Easier access and escape routes
- Longer periods without people passing through the corridor
This does not mean that apartments on other floors are completely safe, but in Budapest’s older residential buildings, lower and upper levels often present better opportunities for criminals.
The Weakest Lock Usually Becomes the Target
Many people assume that burglars choose apartments based on their value. In reality, they often choose based on the quality of the lock.
A burglar walking through a corridor may quickly identify vulnerable doors that have:
- Old lock cylinders
- Poorly protected lock hardware
- Exposed cylinders protruding from the door
- Standard keys that can be easily duplicated
- No anti-drill or anti-snap protection
Most criminals do not want to spend unnecessary time at a door. The faster they believe they can gain entry, the more attractive the apartment becomes.
Never Let Your Lock Cylinder Protrude
One of the most common security issues we encounter in District 6 and District 7 is a lock cylinder that extends beyond the protective escutcheon or security plate.
Even a few millimeters of exposed cylinder can create a significant vulnerability. A protruding cylinder is generally easier to attack and may be more susceptible to physical force.
A properly sized cylinder should sit flush with the security hardware and should not noticeably extend beyond the surface of the door fitting.
Why Anti-Snap and Anti-Drill Protection Matter
Modern security cylinders are designed with additional protection against common forms of attack.
When choosing a new lock cylinder, we strongly recommend selecting one that includes:
- Anti-snap protection
- Anti-drill protection
- Reinforced internal components
- Security certification from a reputable manufacturer
No lock can guarantee absolute protection, but high-security cylinders significantly increase the time and effort required to compromise a door. In many cases, this alone is enough to discourage an opportunistic burglar.
Choose a Key System with Copy Protection
Physical attacks are not the only security concern.
If you have recently rented an apartment in Budapest, you may not know how many copies of the key exist or who may have had access to them in the past.
This is why we recommend installing a lock cylinder with a protected key profile or copy-protected key system.
These systems help prevent unauthorized key duplication and provide better control over who can obtain additional copies.
When Should You Replace the Lock After Moving In?
For most foreign tenants moving into Budapest’s city center, replacing the lock cylinder is a relatively small investment compared to the security benefits.
We generally recommend a replacement if:
- You have just moved into a new apartment
- The existing cylinder appears old or worn
- The cylinder protrudes from the door
- The lock lacks anti-drill or anti-snap protection
- The keys can be freely duplicated
- You are unsure who may still have a copy of the key
